Removing a Used Refinery

09/08/2009

Sept 09 - A used refinery which was dismantled 10 years ago and since then stored at the Dutch

port of Moerdijk was recently shipped to India. The German Project Forwarder Deugro and COLI

teamed up for this job and were appointed for the contract of affreightment, consisting of totally

aprx. 150.000 FRT – including 27 heavy units between 100 – 240 mtons.

The units measured up to 54 m in length, 11 m in width and 12 m in height and were in a noticeable condition

resulting from the long storage period. The refinery was shipped in a total of 13 lots, whereof 3 in 2008 and

10 lots in 2009.

The Majority of the cargo was safely discharged at Cuddalore anchorage, about 1 nautical mile off the shore

line, directly onto pontoons and barges. The weather conditions were with us and we only had minor stoppages

caused by swell.  A special jetty brought the cargo ashore from the pontoons and barges involved.

Undoubtedly a challenging job, which required special expertise, good teamwork and solutions beyond the ordinary.
